Fashion Design & Merchandising: Welcome

Students will gain an understanding of the basics of fashion design and merchandising, and develop a business plan for marketing their personal skills and abilities in the area of fashion. 

Students will:

  • Identify fashion designers and their impact on the history and

  • evolution of fashion.

  • Understand basic fashion terminology and design details.

  • Recognize the use of textiles and the principles and elements of

  • design in fashion

  • Explore career options in the fashion industry.

  • Explain fashion marketing strategies that impact families and

  • individuals.

  • Examine entrepreneurship opportunities in the fashion industry and

  • develop a fashion marketing business plan

CLASSWORK & PROJECTS

Here is all of the work that I have done in class.

FADS VS. CLASSICS

Find a picture of a current fashion (clothing/shoe/accessory) fad.  Where did it come from?  Explain why you think it won’t last.
Find a picture of a classic fashion (clothing/shoe/accessory) style. Where did it originate? Why do you think it has endured?

DESIGN DETAILS

This is your File description. Concisely describe the content of your file and make sure to highlight your contact details for further questions and remarks.

FASHION BASICS - FABRICS, ELEMENTS, AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

Design a line of clothing that includes the Elements and Principles of Design listed below. All designs should fit within BYU-Idaho standards of modesty. There should be 5 outfits, one for each element and principle listed. There should be something distinctly unique about each item you design.

  3. Asymmetrical balance

  4. Focal Point

  5. Rhythm

TRADE ASSOCIATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS

Find something that would be feasible for you to join if you end up in this profession. Do NOT use Fashion Magazines (Glamour, GQ) or internet sites for the publication--it must be something specific to the career.  Submit in I-learn the name of the career you chose, the name of the association and the publication, a link to each of their websites, cost of membership (regular/student) and a short description of the focus of each.

FASHION SURVEY ASSIGNMENT

Conducted a survey with other students. Have to be able to graph it, see demographics, and has to have a conclusion of what you learned from your survey.

FINAL PROJECT - BRAND NAME, TAG LINE, MISSION STATEMENT AND DESIGNER INFORMATION

1. Submit the brand name of your product, what the product is (if not obvious), and the tag line (company slogan).
2. Write a short paragraph summarizing the purpose and vision of your company, why you picked this product for a business, and how you came up with the name of your company.
3. Write a 1/3 page of information about you as the designer (include a picture) in third person. Include your education, where you are from, how you became interested in fashion, and any related fashion experience.

FINAL PROJECT - ANTICIPATED MARKET, FLYER, FEATURES AND OPTIONS

  • Product features (what's great about your product) and options (things customer can choose--size, color, length, etc.)

  • Anticipated market – who is going to buy the product

  • One page product information flyer that can be left with the retailer – include contact information

FINAL PROJECT - BUDGET

With a start-up budget of $500.00 for your company, itemize how you will spend the money on the products.  This does not include any overhead (rent, labor, insurance, etc.).
If you are selling a product that needs to be sewn, you should include the cost of patterns, fabric (type, cost per yard, # of yards needed, total cost), thread, zippers (type, cost per item, total cost), buttons (number, cost), lace (type, cost per yard, total cost), interfacing (cost per yard, yards needed, total cost), and any other needed items.  Include a link to the website where you got your prices. Needs to have pictures of finished product!
If you are selling a product that is already made, include a link(s) to the website(s) where you are buying the clothing.  Number of items if buying in bulk, cost per group of items, total cost. Needs to have picture of finished product!

FINAL PROJECT - ORDER FORM AND AVAILABILITY

  • Product availability – how long does it take from order time to receipt?

  • Product order form – should include name/address/phone of company

FASHION ADS

Create a sale ad for your business 

The ad should be either for a magazine, newspaper, outdoor (billboard), direct mail or business directory.

Include the following:

  • An illustration of your product

  • Name and address of store

  • Hours store is open

  • Items for sale/price

  • Dates for sale

  • Have a slogan, theme or other sales tactic

  • It should be neat and easy to read

  • Correct grammar and spelling

  • Creative and original

GLOBAL EVENTS

What do these two incidents have in common?
What was accomplished in the textile industry in the U.S. because of the Triangle Fire?
How does global sourcing affect product development, quality, speed-to-market or cost? (Pick one to discuss)
What is fair trade?
What are our suggestions or improving the situation in Bangladesh and other countries where textiles are made?

FINAL PROJECT - CREATE A FASHION RELATED BUSINESS

Create a fashion related business for a specific item of clothing or accessory.  You can use one of the designs that you created in the design assignment.  It can be shoes or handbags, but not jewelry, headbands, hair-bows, underwear or lingerie.  All items should meet BYU-Idaho standards of modesty.
